Peter Orr (600 x 450)
Peter Orr - 31.6.07 – Burrendong Fishing Trip – Bogged to the axles.

Burrendong Dam

Carp and Catties continue to bite well at Burrendong. If you want to get onto a couple, head to the Mudgee end and travel up over the hill past the Managers House and fish the Southern End of the rock Wall where the water turns to head for the main body of the dam. Use worms for bait and fish them on the bottom. Turn up 2 to 3 hours before dark and fish to around 2 hours after dark.

big reddy (295 x 497)
Redfin like this beauty caught by Nathan Miles are on the bite around the region at the moment.

I have got a few reports over the last month of people catching redfin in various spots but the best has come from Jon Osborn who pulled up to fish to 1.2kg at the Wellington end of Burrendong a couple of weekends ago. Redfin are an introduced fish but are good table fare and a great fighting fish.

Upper Cudgegong / Rylstone Weir / Dunn’s Swamp

All fairly quite except for the odd cattie.

Middle Cudgegong

Still closed to all fishing until 29th September.

Lower Cudgegong

Cod (538 x 404)
A small but fat cod caught by Nathan Miles, “somewhere near town”.
The Lower Cudgegong has been the pick of the spots this month and it will be next month as it has really started to fire in the colder months. Cod, Carp and Reddies are all being caught in good numbers.

Nathan Miles went for a fish ‘Not to far from town’ on the lower Cudgegong during the week and pulled up hard on a nice little cod of a round 3 pounds, that was quickly released. The bait; scrub worms dug up from the riverbank!

Kelly Webb (600 x 450)
Kelly Webb outfishes the boys with a sizeable golden perch.
What did the yellowbelly say when he swam into the concrete wall? Dam

Peter Reilly tells me that as soon as his redfin look-alike soft plastic lure hit the water out at Louth last week he was into the golden perch. With 2 fish in 2 minutes both around 5 pound and the fishing continued like that until he lost the lure. Needless to say his tackle box has now been replenished.

DPI Fisheries have put out there 2007/2008 Native Fish Stocking Plan for Dams and Lakes and is open for public comment until 31st August 2007. It can be found at www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au (www.fisheries.nsw.gov.au) Plan sees the following stockings planned for local waterways:

field days 1 (576 x 503)

  • Windamere – 75,000

Murray Cod:

  • Burrendong – 50,000
  • Windamere – 50,000

Silver perch:

  • Burrendong – 75,000
  • Windamere – 30,000

field days 3 (600 x 450)

Ant Endacott’s Patented Lure Retriever - At low water levels let the sheep graze on the exposed open ground that is usually underwater.. Come shearing time you can re-stock your tackle box with lures found in the fleece that the sheep picked up on their travels.

The free field days fishing clinics went very well with over 150 kids participating and winning an array of prizes. Many of the kids had never fished before and walked away with instruction on how to cast a fishing rod as well as a showbag and for a lucky few a prize to go along with it. Many thanks to Mudgee Camping World and RFFTEC for donating the showbags and prizes.
