Well the wind seems to have eased off for today and tomorrow morning so if you’re itching for a fish, now’s the time. Anglers have been catching decent sized Bream at the mouth of Beelbi Creek on fresh strips of mullet and unweighted cubes of pillie. Fishing the mouth on an outrunning tide with either soft plastics, or bait, should see a feed of fish caught.

The whiting on poppers trend is booming at the moment with several reports of success on river 2 sea bubble pop 45’s. These lures make a great splash that imitates a prawn and the whiting can’t resist it. They also work best if you scratch off the paint and leave it clear. Fish have been caught around the Shelly Beach area at low tide as well as south of the boat harbour. Just remember keep that rod tip high and continually move the lure.

During the day at the Urangan pier, gar, whiting and flathead are being landed as well as the odd school mackerel. At night bream have been landed fishing tight against the pylons with small whole herring and mullet gut.

If you can make it out to the Arti there have been a few quality snapper and coral bream caught on hardihead and pilchard baits. Fish with small sinkers, and fluorocarbon leaders, to maximize your chances. 4 inch Squidgy and Powerbait flick baits are another option as they imitate a wounded bait fish.

Gatakers has been fishing well for grunter, coralies, snapper and blackall amongst the patches of reef. Fresh herring and hardiheads have been the best baits but fish have also been caught on whole prawns drifted down a berley trail.

School mackerel have been found in numbers around moon. They do tend to surface in schools from time to time but mostly are found down further in the water column. Try a troll from the mouth of the breakthrough at Moon, heading towards Coongul Point. Rapala X Raps or CD-9’s and 14’s work a treat as they need to be trolled a little quicker than a normal lure. Otherwise anchor up on the ledge and fish whole pillies on a ganged 4/0 hook set.

From Kingfisher down to McKenzie’s there have been good schools of long tail tuna. The tuna are feeding on small baitfish so try using small metal slugs, clear soft plastics or epoxy baitfish pattern flies. These fish put up a great fight and are an excellent sportfish.

With the high seas things have been a bit quiet this week however as the seas die down there should be some good fish caught this weekend. Bream have been landed at both Poyungan and Yidney Rocks on pippies and sandworm. There has also been some dart caught in the gutters all along the beach.

With the SE winds the water is still fairly cool and after the rain there is still a lot of murky water. A few bass have been landed this week mainly on C’ultiva mira vibes and RMG scorpions, most commonly straight off the bank! Zip n Ziggy’s have also been working early morning and late afternoon cast around the lilly edges.

The dam has been very quiet this week due to the SE winds. If you can find some warm water in the deeper areas you might be able to troll up a fish. If the water warms up the dam should fire.

Its been another quiet week at Awoonga because of the SE winds however some anglers have managed good fish. Most of the barra have been caught around the dirty water casting Captiva Wasagis around the submerged timber and shallow weed beds and trolling Captiva Sumaris around the drop offs. Fish were also landed on the River 2 Sea bully wa 65’s cast into the weed pockets and worked back with a twitching action. Bully wa’s are a weedless rubber frog and can be worked in rugged country without snagging up.

Angler Fion Hurley from the gold coast had a week long stay at Kingfisher Resort. Fion decided to try some offshore fishing and caught this neat golden trevally as well as plenty of mac tuna near moon point, the wind was blowing, but there is nearly always somewhere to fish.
