Mudgee Region Report - March 2008

Brought to you by www.fishntrips.com.au

With the colder weather we have had this month fish activity has really shut down. A few fish were caught at the Dams over Windamere and the trout are still going strong on the river but apart from that the fishing scene has been very quiet. I think the fish are preparing for a cold winter as well!

----------

Windamere Dam

Yella’s up to 58cm were reported coming from the dam over the long weekend as well as a fair few undersize cod captures. The late season run of silver perch that we usually get at Windamere has not come this year although bait anglers report good numbers of catfish being caught just before to about an hour after dark.

8 year old Trish Lowe’s second fishing trip earned her second fish. On her first trip on Boxing Day she hooked a fish but it was a bit too big to fit in the net and broke the little pink line and got away. Not her second fish though – after trolling a red lure around Windamere Dam she hooked up solid too and landed a nice Murray Cod. Well done Trish!

--------------

Burrendong Dam

Good numbers of yella’s and cod are still being reported in the main basin of the dam.

----------

Middle Cudgegong

The trout fishing on the middle Cudgegong is still going strong. Over the last month I have had about a dozen clients out and have all connected with good fish. There are good hatches and rising happening around 9am as well as in the evening. Green nymphs fished under a dry fly indicator (Royal Wulf being the pick) has been the preferred method and is producing great results.

--------------

Other Stuff:

Orry vs. Bagget The mammoth clash of the Titans (and voting) wrapped up this week in the case of 3 Yellowbelly vs. 1 undersized Cod. When speaking to both prosecution and defence (Bagget and Orry) during the week, Orry (the legal beagle) ‘Objected!’ to Bagget’s votes stating that it were unethical that Bagget’s mother was allowed to vote. The motion was dismissed on the grounds that mothers can do anything they like. Bagget then moved for an objection of his own stating that it was immoral that Orry had had enlisted no-fishing legal uni students to submit votes. His evidence included quotes from the voters such as “legally, you can't discriminate against a yellowbelly on the basis of his race or colour!”. This did not sound like your average fisherman, he made a strong case. But in the end the case was dismissed as both were disqualified for tampering with evidence. So the question still stands: Is the mighty Murray Cod a more prized sportsfish than any amount of Yellowbelly?
