Recreational anglers can now enjoy safe and convenient access to Merriman’s Creek thanks to the installation of a fishing platform at Seaspray, Acting Executive Director, Travis Dowling said today.
Mr Dowling said anglers were consulted to determine a preferred site for the platform. The Seaspray Reserves Committee of Management co-ordinated the project using $8300 received from the annual Recreational Fishing Grants Program.
Built over a muddy, slippery bank this fishing platform provides clean, safe family fishing for anglers keen on chasing whiting and bream.
Chairperson of the Seaspray Reserves Committee of Management, David Nolan said the platform has proven to be so popular, particularly during holiday periods, that there are plans for its extension.
Using a pontoon there are plans to extend the existing platform a further few metres, providing shore based anglers with access to deeper sections of the creek.
This project is another great example of how revenue from the Recreational Fishing Licence is being used to improve freshwater and saltwater opportunities in Victoria.
Funding from the Recreational Grants Program has meant that anglers visiting Merriman’s Creek are safely separated from the launching of boats at a nearby boat ramp.
Since the commencement of the annual Victorian Recreational Fishing Grants Program in 2001/2002, almost 200 projects totalling over $6.7 million have been funded.
