Lake Bullen Merri near Camperdown in Victoria’s South West has been experiencing some impressive brown and rainbow trout catches lately.

The Acting Executive Director of Fisheries Victoria, Travis Dowling, says the lake is one of Victoria’s finest recreational trout fisheries with good populations of brown trout, rainbow trout and chinook salmon.

These are all stocked into Bullen Merri annually as part of the Department of Primary Industries’ (DPI) program.

Last year the water received 5,000 brown trout, 10,000 rainbow trout and 3,650 chinook salmon.

Lake Bullen Merri is known to hold fish of remarkable size and quality. With a number of waters temporarily taken off the annual stocking list due to drought conditions, Bullen Merri remains a great location in the state’s south-west for Victorian anglers.

The fish that have been caught are over three kilograms, telling us they are around three years old, which means they have thrived as they are initially placed into the water when they are one.

It also has an emerging population of Australian bass, which makes the water unique in being a superior put-and-take mixed fishery, providing anglers with some fantastic fishing experiences.

Bank fishing is accessible almost the entire circumference of the lake and water in excess of 20 meters can easily be cast to.

Fisheries Victoria remains committed to supporting Lake Bullen Merri as an iconic freshwater destination for trout and salmon, and will continue to stock the water annually.
