Mudgee Region Fishing Report – June 2008

Trout Season Closed The trout fishing season for the Cudgegong River (Lawson park to Windamere) closed at midnight on Monday of the June long weekend after a very productive fishing season. We saw all sizes of trout from fish barely bigger than a lure to fish in excess of 5 pounds caught this season. What’s good to see as well is that with so many anglers practicing catch and release, on the closing weekend there were still a whole range of fish sizes in the river. I went out on Friday for a fish with my friend Milesy and we would have seen in excess of 30 trout ranging from yearling size to around 3 or 4 pound. The Cudgegong River between Windamere Dam wall and Lawson Park Weir (and all Tributaries) is now closed to ALL forms of fishing until Saturday morning of the October Long Weekend.

Funny Story Billy Dowdy and Robbie O’Connor went on a camping and hiking trip over at Oberon a few weeks back. They had gone to bed and were lying there looking up at the sky. Robbie said, "Billy, look up. What do you see? "Well, I see thousands of stars." "And what does that mean to you?" "Well, I guess it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Robbie?" "To me, it means someone has stolen our tent."

Travel a little further afield Although it has been a little slow locally recently, for those willing to travel a little there is still some good fishing to be had. Thompson Creek Dam is only around an hour away located just outside of Wallerawang and is producing good numbers of trout. Being a trophy trout dam it is open to fishing all year round but can only be fished with lure and fly. Soft plastics have been the choice of lures of late fished either around the edges of the weedbeds or fished in the deeper water depending on the weather conditions on the day. It’s a very very cold place to fish in winter so wear the thermals, gloves, beanies and big jackets or do as Kurtzy and I did and take a hippie full of Jack.

Only One? The other day a fisherman returned to shore with a giant marlin that was bigger and heavier than he. On the way to the cleaning shed, he ran into a second fisherman who had a stringer with a dozen baby minnows. The second fisherman looked at the marlin, turned to the first fisherman and said, " Only caught one, eh?"
