A 47-year-old commercial Rock Lobster fisherman from Portland has been convicted and fined $1000 for taking and consigning for sale undersized rock lobster.
In the Portland Magistrates’ Court, Robert Davis, a fisherman for 28 years, pleaded guilty to 2 charges of taking undersized rock lobster and 2 charges of consigning them for sale.
Earlier this year Fisheries Officers inspected Mr Davis’ catch upon his return to the Fisherman’s wharf in Portland from fishing. Officers measured the 68 lobsters contained in the catch and found 7 to be under the legal size limit.
Magistrate Ronald Saines told Davis size limits were in place to protect the marine environment for future generations and that commercial fishermen have a greater obligation to abide by them.
Michael Hodder, the Director of Field Services of Fisheries Victoria said the sustainable management of Victoria’s fisheries resources, especially priority species like rock lobster, required commercial fishermen to abide by Fisheries legislation. Suspected illegal fishing activity can be reported to the 24 hour reporting line 13 FISH (13 3474)
