Bass have been on the bite recently at Lake Samsonvale Nrth Brisbane.A combination of increased water levels, air pressure between 1020hPa & 1025hPa & the recent "cold snap" has increased the chances of landing Bass 50cm+ from the shore. The big bass have been cruising into newly flooded areas to feed & the recent "cold snap" will see Bass moving from deeper waters to seek warmer water in the shallows. The high air pressures have also added to these conditions to put the bass on the bite.Spinner baits have proven to be lure of choice. On cloudy days & in discoloured water I use spinner baits with dark coloured or black & red skirts & gold coloured blades. On sunny days & in clear water I tend to use light coloured skirts & silver blades.I use a 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz spinner baits & prefer the double Colorado blades. Double Colorado blades sink slower than Willow leaf blades & this allows you to start retreiving before the spinner bait gets caught in weed, grass & staggy bottoms. The double colarado also emits the greatest amount of vibration, which in turn attracts fish. Tadem Blade spinner baits can also be effective as this lure puts out vibration from the colorado blade & flash from the willowleaf blade. After casting, try both letting the lure sink first & immediate retrieval to find out if the Bass are striking from the bottom or top & the slowest retrieval possible while keeping the blades spinning. Hard bodied deep diving lures such as jackels & kakodas are effective for longer casts & deeper water, but tend to dredge & collect weed & grass in nearly flooded ares more so than spinner baits. Rather than casting straight out from the shore, try casting from points across coves. To avoid missing strikes I highly recomend adding a stinger hook to your spinnerbait & to make your offerings more appealing also add a tail/soft plastic to either both hooks or just the stinger hook.
Before fishing Lake Samsonvale make sure you get a fishing permit from your local tackle store, check that the area you are fishing is not a newly marked RED Zone & plenty of insect repellant if fishing early morning & late afternoon
Until next time good luck & tight lines
