Where abouts?

It is different all over Australia as all times, as the pressure systems move over our great country.

Here is a link to the BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) (www.bom.gov.au). This is the weather for Sydney. The hPa column is the pressure we are talking about.

This will give you a better idea of what we are talking about. Another link to the BOM, only this time it is the Observation Map (www.bom.gov.au). You will have seen these on the news.

Pay attention to the Barometric pressure and monitor your result (keep a Fishing Diary or use Spooled as a Diary, as you can enter everything about your trip and even enter it on the map, you can even set it to private if you dont want anyone else to see it).

Watch how quick your result improve just by fishing to the Barometer. We generally dont go Bass fishing unless it is right That is how dramatic the diference is.

In a generic way of speaking; Southern native fish i.e. murray cod, yellow belly, aussie bass etc are very much influencened by the barometric pressure. If it is rising then a good day will usually be had if fishing for these species but it does also depend on water temp, time of year, rising or falling water umongst other variations. Some saltwater species are also known to bite better with a rising barometer such as snapper but generally tides and the moon phase dictates what a salt water fish will do rather than barometric pressure. To be a constant producer of fish and especially different species, records are to be kept, even on the worst days as this will give you thye best idea of what to target and when. Make no bones about it though for some species (bass especially as rick has mentioned) the barometric pressure and which way it is going is crucial.

Yep I have to agree with Rick. The only time we ever went bass fishing was 1015 (minimum) and rising. So long as the barometer was rising, we caught fish. Interestingly, the higher it was the more action we saw. Around 1030 our lures usually got smashed on the surface before we even gave em a twitch.

I haven't worked it out for cod yet. dicko...

Do any of you specifically chase a minimum barometer before you start heading out for Cod if son where does it start (what barometer)?

I don't have a minimum for cod. I will still go fishing even if I believe I won't catch anything. It's just great to get out on the water. There's no other option out west.

With bass, however, I wouldn't bother if it was lower than 1010. I would go fishing in the saltwater and target a fish which would better suit the prevailing conditions. dicko..
