Recently I have been talking to a few guys that I see every now and then when out fishing and they have been catching whiting and bream on small poppers in the lower parts of our estuary. Bream I always thought would go a popper at times but I never knew you could coax a whiting into doing so, not regularly anyhow. Something I will definatley give a go. Any body else out there done this??

I have been braining the whiting on popper of late. Starting to slow as the weather gets colder. the secret i have found is to not let the popper stop moving. unlike bass and bream that seem to need the pause, the whiting love a moving target |

A friend of mine fished the last of a big low tide the other day with small SP for flatties. he bagged a few and got one a whiting on a fast retrieve after a bungled cast. he then tied on a 'clear surface lure' ( I dunno what brand or length). he then caught several whiting on this lure as the tide began to make. The whiting are quite prevalent at this time of the year so I wouldn't expect this kind of outcome on a regular basis. Hope it helps your venture. www.mackayfishing.com.au |

Thanks for that guys. In my area too the whiting can get thick this time of year and I am looking for the weather to settle ( it's persisting down at the moment!) and I am going to have a crack at 'em. I'm even thinking that a small popper type fly might intice them. In the mean time any more info, lure brands/sizes, tides, shallow/deep water prefered etc would be much appreciated. |

Hi folks, I never thought Whiting would go a popper. After reading this I am planning on a trip on either this Friday or Saturday and will report back on the outcome. Can anyone suggest a good popper to use (size, color etc)? I have mainly been a bait fisher person and have never used soft plastic's, but have used hard bodied lures before, so some help would go down great. |
