They are big fish. (Impoundment Barra) I have fished for Barra on numerous occasions but my PB is 97cm. Your first fish is going to be bigger then that :) I hear that sea run Barra fight harder and that stands to reason but it doesn't change the fact that I want a 120cm monster out of Monduran, Awoonga or the like. |

Hi Rick, My Mates went there last year for their first time, they got 3 in two days, 1 x 115cm, 1 x 90cm & 1 x 75cm, so this has been planned now for 12 months, taking my 7yo son with me, he loves fishing, but I don't think he knows what he is in for. |

I am so pumped for you Darryn ( You talk about it to all your work colugues (spelling?) and your home life is limited/refrained because all you want to talk about is your trip and she is sick of hearing about it. HEEHeeeeHeeee. We will all be thinking of you. Are you going guided or doing it alone?

Hi Rick, you hit the nail on the head, my work mates are sick of hearing about it, and the missus, can't wait to get rid of me, I think I have changed the layout for the gear in the boat about 5 times, and I'm sure, that by the end of this week, I will have changed it another 5 times, not going guided, but going with mates that went last year, who have a couple of special spots( so they reckon).

Sunday 28th September, 6am left for Lake Monduran, stopped at Grafton for a sleep, back on the road by 1:30am and arrived at Lake Monduran by 10am. After putting our bags in the house set our gear we all went and bought fishing licenses, only $7 for a week, Bargain! We hit the water at around 2pm, this was my first day Barra Fishing, you would have been forgiven for thinking it was my first day fishing! The boat was launched (without the bung) stuff up number one. Fixed that up – off to the bays across from the boat ramp, on arrival at the first spot I found that the only lures we had were the ones on the rods – stuff up number two! No action first day, day 2 we head off, bung in and Lures on board, off to my mates secret spot, problem was the secret spot had turned from a shallow creek to a bay the size of football fields! No luck second day. After no luck on day three, we were told that there had been a cold snap just before we got there and the water temperature had dropped 5 degrees, we were also told that when this happens, the Barra go off the bite for up to a week! We kept at it and day four no luck, day five no luck, and not to break the pattern, day six, no luck – oh forgot to mention, we had brought one of my mates along who is a videographer (not a fisherman) So when it came to day 7, our video man said he’d had enough of nothing to film and was staying home. Not a good start to day 7, we headed off to an area that had given one of the guys a hit the day before, after almost four hours of throwing lures, I dropped my attention only to hit another snag, so I thought, only this snag started to take off like a bullet train in a large arc from one side of the boat around the rear to the other side, I was on ! or she was on (I’m still not sure), she rose through the water to jump and dance a total of four times, my mate Steve jumped into my boat with the largest net we had, then, before I knew it I had her beside the boat and head first into the net. As we lifted her into the boat, she gave us one last thrash, soaked both of us and placed about two litres of water into my boat. I would have to say I have never experienced any sort of fishing like this before. She measured a lovely 101cm on the truth mat and with her oversized waistline knocked on the 40lb mark. My first Barra, on a baitcaster which I had borrowed from my cousin to use trolling as I had no confidence casting baitcasters, but I gave it a go the day before a caught a catfish. Once I found out just how easy they are, I couldn’t put it down. The rod was a cheap Abu 8kg that I bought a couple of years ago, but had never used it. The line, 20lb fine line yellow, leader 50lb and the big one, the lure a Big W special $4.50 Kokoda, not beafed up. After taking photos with my prize I started to troll back out of the bay to go home, before I was hit, by the time I stood up and placed the Minkota in reverse 3, I could start to see backing through the braid, panic started to set in, I retrieved some ground then off it went again this time all the braid was gone and the backing was getting thin, adrenalin pumping, nerves shaking, I managed to get back to the braid, I gave a slight jerk with the rod, and the fish gave me a thump back and it was all over. I hadn’t changed my leader after the first fish, and that was where I lost it, and my prized $4.50 Kokoda Lure. We fished another 4 day, all with no luck this experience is one I will never forget, sharing it with my seven year old son on board, and my mates on two other boats, I am still flying high. Would like to thank the staff at Lake Monduran Holiday Park for their friendly service any one going up there please take some friendly advice and get a guide for the first time to give you a heads up, we will next year!
